God calls children to obey and honor their parents and parents to raise their children in the Lord; together, we paint a picture of God's love, grace, faith, and surrender.

In times of challenge or opportunity, what's your immediate reaction? Do you reach for your phone to call a friend, search the internet for solutions, or fall into worry? Today's message reminds us of a better way. When we make prayer our first response rather than our last resort, we align ourselves with God's wisdom and timing from the very beginning. This isn't about dismissing practical steps or wise counsel - it's about establishing the right order. By seeking God first, we allow Him to guide our subsequent actions and decisions.

Moving Forward When God Moves: Lessons from Nehemiah's Journey

When God places a burden on our hearts, knowing how to respond can be challenging. Through Nehemiah's example, we learn valuable lessons about recognizing God's timing and moving forward in faith.

          Understanding Your Divine Positioning

Just as Nehemiah was positioned as the king's cupbearer for a greater purpose, we too are strategically placed in our current circumstances. Whether in our families, workplaces, or communities, we're called to "bloom where we're planted" and recognize that our positioning is intentional, not accidental.

How Do You Know When Your Burden is from God?

One key indicator is when your burden becomes visible to others. Nehemiah's distress was so evident that even the king noticed something was wrong. While we shouldn't broadcast everything, having trusted confidants who can support us through prayer and biblical wisdom is essential.

What Should Be Our First Response to God's Calling?

Prayer should be our first response, not our last resort. Before making his request to the king, Nehemiah prayed to the "King of Kings." This pattern of seeking God first, rather than consulting others and asking for God's blessing afterward, is crucial for spiritual success.

There's a distinct difference between worldly confidence and what we might call "Godfidence":

"Godfidence" is humble confidence in God's favor and power, not our own.

This week, consider these questions and challenges:

          Challenge:

Commit to making prayer your first response this week. Before each significant conversation or decision, pause for even a brief moment to pray, "Lord, give me success in this moment."

          Remember:

The surest way to see God's helping hand is to seek His heart first. When God moves, you move - but let Him be responsible for the results.

God's plan for our lives often unfolds right where we are. While we might dream of different circumstances or locations, He calls us to flourish in our current placement. This doesn't mean we'll never move or change, but it does mean that our present situation is rich with purpose and potential. Whether you're at home raising children, in a challenging workplace, or serving in your community, God can use you powerfully right where you are.

Have you ever wondered why you're in your current situation? Whether it's your job, your neighborhood, or your relationships, nothing in your life is random. Just like Nehemiah, who served as the king's cupbearer, you are strategically positioned by God for His purposes. This truth can transform how we view our daily circumstances. Instead of seeing our situation as coincidental or perhaps even frustrating, we can begin to look for God's purpose in our placement. Your office, classroom, or home isn't just a location - it's a mission field where God has specifically placed you to make a difference.

God is always at work in our world, opening doors and creating opportunities. The challenge isn't usually in recognizing these opportunities - it's in having the courage to walk through them when they appear. When God moves, we're called to move with Him. This requires both discernment to recognize His timing and faith to step forward when He leads. Standing in the hallway of indecision while God holds a door open isn't where He wants us to remain.

There's a profound difference between confidence and what we might call 'Godfidence.' While confidence often stems from our abilities and achievements, Godfidence flows from our trust in God's power and faithfulness. This humble assurance allows us to step out in faith, knowing that our strength comes not from ourselves but from God. It enables us to make bold moves while maintaining a humble heart, recognizing that any success comes from His gracious hand.

When was the last time something broke your heart? For Nehemiah, it was hearing about Jerusalem's destroyed walls and burned gates. This news didn't just make him sad - it burdened his heart so deeply that it moved him to action. God often works through burdened hearts to accomplish His purposes. These divine burdens aren't meant to crush us but to move us closer to Him and His purposes. When we feel that weight of concern for a situation, person, or community, it's often God's way of inviting us into His redemptive work. Your burdens aren't accidents; they're assignments. They're not meant to overwhelm you but to guide you toward your purpose.

Positioned for Purpose: Learning from Nehemiah's Response to God's Call

Life can change dramatically in an instant. One ordinary day can become extraordinary when God reveals His purpose for our lives. Through Nehemiah's example, we learn how to recognize and respond when God positions us for His purposes.

What Does it Mean to be Positioned for Purpose?

God doesn't make accidents - He intentionally positions us in specific places, seasons, and situations for His purposes. Just as Nehemiah was positioned as cupbearer to the king, we too are positioned wherever we are for God's purposes.

How Should We Respond When God Reveals His Purpose?

When Nehemiah learned about Jerusalem's destruction, his response teaches us three key principles:

He wept instead of trying to work

He fasted instead of trying to fix

He prayed instead of trying to perform

          What Makes Prayer Powerful?

Prayer should be our first response, not our last resort. Nehemiah's prayer followed the ACTS model:

           Adoration: Expressing God's goodness

           Confession: Acknowledging sin

           Thanksgiving: Expressing gratitude

           Supplication: Making requests

How Long Should We Wait Before Taking Action?

Nehemiah spent 4-5 months in prayer before taking action. This teaches us that real prayer keeps our hearts and heads balanced so our burdens don't make us run ahead of God's timing.

What Happens When We're Truly Burdened by God?

A truly burdened heart leads to bold prayer. When God places a burden on our hearts for people, situations, or issues, our first response should be to pray before taking action.

Restoration is at the heart of God's work in our world. Just as Nehemiah was called to restore Jerusalem's walls, God is in the business of restoration in our lives and communities today. But restoration begins with surrender. Nehemiah had to surrender his comfortable position, his plans, and his timing to be part of God's restoration project. When we surrender our lives to God's purposes, we become instruments of His restoration work. This might mean stepping out of our comfort zones, adjusting our plans, or waiting on His timing. But the results of such surrender are always worth it.

Have you ever wondered why you're in your current situation? Maybe you're in a job that seems mundane, a neighborhood that feels random, or circumstances that appear meaningless. Yet, just as Nehemiah was positioned as a cupbearer to the king - a position that would later prove crucial for God's plans - you too are where you are for a purpose. God doesn't make mistakes in His positioning. Every detail of your life, from your workplace to your relationships, has been carefully orchestrated by a loving Father who sees the bigger picture. Your current position, whatever it may be, is not an accident but an appointment. God has strategically placed you where you are for His divine purposes, even if you can't see them yet.

It's easy to let our emotions drive our actions, especially when we're passionate about something. But Nehemiah demonstrates the importance of maintaining balance between our heart's burden and our head's wisdom. Through prayer, he found this crucial equilibrium. His heart was deeply burdened for Jerusalem, but his head was guided by God's timing and wisdom. This balance kept him from running ahead of God's plan or falling behind in fear. When we bring our burdens to God in prayer, He helps us find this same balance. He doesn't diminish our passion but channels it effectively.

In our fast-paced world, we often rush to solve problems immediately. We see an issue and want to fix it right away. But Nehemiah shows us a different way. When faced with Jerusalem's devastation, he didn't immediately spring into action. Instead, he spent months in prayer, seeking God's guidance and timing. This wasn't passive waiting - it was active spiritual preparation. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is pause and pray. This doesn't mean we never act; it means we act from a place of prayer-filled wisdom rather than rushed reaction. When we make prayer our first response rather than our last resort, we align ourselves with God's timing and methods.

We live in an increasingly isolated world where it's easy to convince ourselves we don't need others. Yet God's design for human flourishing includes community. From the very beginning, He declared it wasn't good for man to be alone. This truth extends beyond marriage to our need for spiritual family. When we participate in small groups or meaningful Christian community, we find support, accountability, and opportunities for growth that we simply can't experience in isolation. Our individual spiritual journey gains depth and dimension when shared with others.

Personal Devotion - Daily time with God through prayer and Bible reading

Group Engagement - Connecting with other believers in small groups

How Can I Develop Personal Devotion?

The simplest approach is to look at what Jesus did and follow His example. Two key practices stand out:

Knowing God's Word - Jesus used scripture to combat temptation and guide His life

Regular Prayer - Jesus frequently withdrew to pray, even early in the morning

Getting into God's Word allows it to get into us. As Psalm 119:11 says, "I have hidden your word in my heart so that I might not sin against you."

Why is Community Important for Spiritual Growth?

God designed us for community - "It is not good for man to be alone" (Genesis 2:18). Group engagement allows us to:

           Be accountable to other believers

           Experience authentic fellowship

           Bear one another's burdens

           Receive loving correction when needed

           Benefit from others' spiritual growth

          What Makes Corporate Worship Essential?

Corporate worship isn't just about singing songs - it's about the church gathering as the Bride of Christ. When we worship together:

We bring our first and best to God

We participate in something bigger than ourselves

We experience unity in praising God

We're shaped by hearing God's Word together

          Life Application

This week, consider taking one concrete step toward spiritual growth:

Start a daily Bible reading plan

           Join a small group

           Commit to regular church attendance

Begin each day in prayer before checking your phone

          Ask yourself:

What would be possible in my life if I spent daily time in God's Word?

How could joining a small group help me grow spiritually?

Am I bringing my best to corporate worship or just going through motions?

What's my next step in developing these spiritual practices?

Remember - the goal isn't perfection but transformation through Christ working in us as we engage in these practices consistently over time.

Jesus was never in a hurry. How awesome is that? He's never in a hurry. And we live very hurried lives sometimes.

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: 'Everyone is looking for you!' - Mark 1:35-37

What specific changes could you make to your daily routine to prioritize time with God before the demands of the day take over?

There's something powerful about corporate worship that can't be replicated in solitude. When we gather with other believers, we participate in something greater than ourselves. It's not about the building or even the preacher - it's about the people of God coming together to celebrate His goodness and grow in His truth. Corporate worship reminds us we're part of a larger story, a greater family. It provides opportunities for encouragement, collective learning, and unified praise that strengthen our individual faith walks.

How might viewing spiritual practices as opportunities for growth rather than obligations change your approach to them?

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. - Hebrews 12:11

Spiritual growth isn't about achieving perfection - it's about living abundantly in Christ. When we embrace spiritual practices like personal devotion, community engagement, and corporate worship, we're not trying to earn God's love. Instead, we're positioning ourselves to experience more of the life He already offers us. These practices, while sometimes challenging, create space for God to work in and through us. Remember, Jesus was perfect so we don't have to be. Our goal is simply to grow more like Him each day, celebrating progress rather than demanding perfection.

In our digital age, we're constantly bombarded with messages competing for our attention. Social media, news, entertainment - they all shape our thinking and behavior. But there's one message that has the power to truly transform us from the inside out: God's Word. When we intentionally fill our minds with Scripture, it becomes our filter for viewing the world and making decisions. It's not about memorizing facts; it's about allowing God's truth to reshape our hearts and minds. Think of it as spiritual nourishment - just as our bodies need daily food, our spirits need daily feeding on God's Word.

Often, we approach God with our plans already made, asking Him to bless what we've decided. But true discipleship involves aligning our will with God's, not the other way around. This requires both humility and trust - humility to admit our ways might not be best, and trust that God's plans for us are good. When we surrender our will to His, we open ourselves to possibilities far greater than we could imagine. This surrender isn't a sign of weakness; it's a position of strength that acknowledges God's wisdom and love for us.

Taking Your Next Step in Faith: A Guide to Spiritual Growth in 2025

The start of a new year brings opportunities for spiritual growth and renewed commitment to our faith journey. Understanding where we are in our walk with Christ is essential for determining our next steps forward.

Where Are You in Your Discipleship Journey?

There are two main categories of people when it comes to faith:

Those in need of Christ (who haven't yet accepted Jesus as Savior)

Those in Christ (believers at different stages of growth)

For those in Christ, there are three stages of discipleship:

Initially in Christ - New believers or those not actively growing

Intentionally growing in Christ - Taking deliberate steps to deepen faith

Investing Christ in others - Discipling and mentoring others while continuing to grow

          What Makes Spiritual Growth Possible?

Three key elements work together to enable spiritual growth:

The Gospel - Understanding and sharing the good news of Jesus

Practices - Regular habits like Bible reading, prayer, and worship

Advancement - Taking action to serve others and spread God's kingdom

          New Initiatives for 2025

Several focused initiatives are launching to help facilitate growth:

Operation 469: Reaching every person in Mansfield with the gospel

HEAR Nights: Monthly gatherings to study Scripture together

Special Needs Ministry: Serving families affected by special needs

Family Ministry: Resources and events to strengthen family discipleship

The Power of Saying Yes to God

Looking at Mary's response to Gabriel in Luke 1:38 - "I am the Lord's servant. May it be done to me according to your word" - we see a powerful example of surrendering to God's will. When we align our will with God's, seemingly impossible things become possible through His power.

          Life Application

As you consider your spiritual journey in 2025, ask yourself:

Where am I currently in my discipleship journey?

What next step is God calling me to take?

What areas of my life need to be surrendered more fully to God's will?

How can I be more intentional about spiritual growth this year?

          Challenge for the week:

Spend time in prayer asking God to reveal your next step of faith. Then commit to taking that step, whether it's joining a Bible study, serving in ministry, or sharing your faith with others.

          Remember:

Nothing is impossible with God when we surrender to His will and take steps of obedience in faith.

My desire is that our will would align with God's will rather than seeking to bend God's will to align with ours.

Then Mary said, 'Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.' And the angel departed from her. - Luke 1:38

What areas of your life are you trying to bend God's will to match yours, rather than seeking to align your will with His?

Growth in faith happens one step at a time. Each step forward, no matter how small it might seem, is significant in God's eyes. He doesn't expect us to have everything figured out or to take giant leaps of faith every day. Instead, He invites us to simply take the next step He's showing us. This might mean starting a daily prayer practice, joining a ministry team, or sharing your faith story with someone. The key is being willing to move when God prompts, trusting that He will guide and provide for each step of the journey.

You will never know what is possible in your life or in the life of the church until you take a next step.

What is the next step God is showing you in your spiritual journey, and what's one practical way you can take that step this week?

In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. - Luke 1:26-27

Every journey begins with knowing where you are. Just as a GPS needs your current location before providing directions, understanding your spiritual position is crucial for growth. Some of us are taking our first steps toward faith, while others have walked with Christ for years. Regardless of where you are, God meets you there with perfect love and purpose. He doesn't expect you to be perfect; He simply invites you to take the next step with Him. Your current position isn't as important as your willingness to move forward in faith. Like Mary in the Gospel of Luke, we're each called to respond to God's invitation with trust and openness.

Spiritual growth isn't meant to be a solo journey. God designed us to grow in community with others who can encourage, challenge, and support us. When we gather together to study His Word, pray, and serve, we create an environment where the Holy Spirit can work powerfully. Like kindling stacked together creates a stronger fire, our faith grows stronger when we join with others in pursuing Christ. This is why being part of a faith community is so vital to our spiritual development.

What we're trying to do as a church is something that's illustrated in this book. We're just trying to stack kindling around your heart, around the family's heart. We're trying to stack as much kindling as we can so when the Holy Spirit comes in and lights the flame, it's fully ablaze.

Every significant movement in God's kingdom began with someone saying 'yes' to His call. These weren't always grand gestures or dramatic moments - often they were simple acts of obedience that God used in remarkable ways. Your 'yes' matters more than you know. Whether it's serving in a ministry, sharing your faith with a neighbor, or joining a Bible study, each step of obedience builds God's kingdom. Don't underestimate how God can use your willingness to serve Him.
